PORCELAIN DECORATED IN
FAMILLE ROSE
ENAMELS,
GRISAILLE AND GOLD
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736–1795), CA. 1740
TUREEN (WITH COVER): HEIGHT 41 CM; LENGTH 38.3 CM;
WIDTH 25 CM
STAND: HEIGHT 4.5 CM; LENGTH 43.3; WIDTH 34 CM
INV. NO. 758
Oblong tureen on four tall, scrolled feet,
its swelling form rising from a narrow base
and tapering below the everted lobed rim.
All around the sides are lobed and ribbed
following the contours of the rim. At either
end are two protruding handles in the shape
of a female face with a prominent nose, red
lips, black eyebrows and long light brown
hair, topped by shell-shaped scrolls
producing a
spagniollete
effect. The dome-
shaped lid evokes a Chinese parasol and
terminates in a ring below a globular finial.
The stand has deep, moulded, wavy sides
that widen towards the everted flat, barbed
rim.
The set was moulded in white porcelain and
covered in an almost colourless glaze. The
feet have a hole to allow air to escape during
firing.
These three items are decorated with
enamels of the
famille rose
palette: blue,
pink, white, iron red, yellow and black, and
grisaille
and gold. The main composition is
formed of leaves, from which sprouts a large
lotus flower with two lateral buds, crossed
over by a yellow ribbon with a lily at each
end. It is framed above and at the sides by
segments of blue trellis pattern reserved
with a flower head and leaf in coral and gilt,
attached above to a pink band with key frets
encircling the tureen between the handles.
Below the rim, a wide cell diaper border in
blue and black, reserved with three white
panels with a
grisaille
landscape framed in
gold and outlined in black on each side.
The decoration of the bowl is repeated on
the lid, the border panels and trellis pattern
sections reserved with yellow and pink flower
heads. The lid’s main decoration is finished
with the petals of an inverted pink lotus
flower, hanging from a pink ring decorated
with blue medallions, each containing an iron
