TUREEN
PORCELAIN DECORATED IN POLYCHROME ENAMELS AND
GOLD
QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD (1662–1722), CA. 1720

HEIGHT 23 CM; RIM DIAMETER 28.5 CM;
FOOT DIAMETER 14 CM

Tureen with slightly rounded sides that
widen gradually toward the narrow, smooth,
everted rim, and domed lid with a moulded,
seated lion finial with an open jaw and visible
teeth, resting on a tapering foot. Made of
white porcelain and coated in an almost clear
glaze.
The decoration consists of three flower
sprays, two with chrysanthemums and one
with peonies, painted in gold with slight
touches of iron red on the body and the lid,
as well as small scattered sprays on the top
and underside of the rim; gold edge.
The arms attributed to D. Luís Peregrino de
Ataíde are placed on one side of the tureen
and in front of the lion on the lid. On the
cartouche, a shield in fanciful format: azure,
three bends Or. Coronet Or with eight
fleurons, of which only five are visible,
alternating with pearls. Crest: a bull issuant
proper. 1 The arms rest on a winged mask
over a crossed bugle and flute.
As there is only one other similar tureen
known in a private Portuguese collection,
this piece is considered a rarity.
