GOLD
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795), CA. 1785
ARMS: BUCARELI, URSÚA, BAEZA, VICENTELO
HEIGHT 14 CM; LENGTH 13 CM; WIDTH 13.5 CM
INV. NO. 750
Small tureen moulded in the shape of a
seated Budai Heshang figure, divided in two
parts, tureen and lid, at chest height. Made
in white porcelain and coated in an almost
clear glaze, except for the flat base which
was left unglazed. Decoration painted in
famille rose
enamels and gold.
The figure is smiling with his mouth open.
He has iron red lips and tongue, white teeth,
a broad, flat nose, large ears, and eyes, his
eyebrows, moustache and beard are painted
en grisaille.
His head, shoulders, stomach,
hands and bare feet are faintly highlighted in
shades of sepia, suggesting flesh colour. This
corpulent figure, dressed as a beggar, with
bare chest and prominent belly, is seated in a
characteristic pose, his right leg bent and
knee raised, his right hand resting on it, and
his left leg bent, with his foot lying next to
his right leg. His left hand is holding the top
of a large cloth sack enamelled in green,
which stands out against the loose iron red
garment decorated with gold floral motifs
that falls from his shoulders. Draped above
this he is wearing a white cloak decorated
with loose flower sprays and reserves with
large pink lotus flowers and blue foliage.
On his stomach and back is a coat of arms
with the following heraldic description:
shield of fanciful format: per pale: I – per
fess: 1st – Or, a fess vert charged with three
mounts Or; 2nd – Or, three doves sable;
II – tierced in fess: 1st – gules, a castle Or
masoned sable, a chief vert charged with two
fleurs-de-lys Or; 2nd – azure, one (?) argent;
3rd – vert, a tower argent with two lions
combatant Or, between two bars Or. Coronet
with rim surmounted by eight fleurons, of
which five are visible, two in profile,
alternating with four pearls, of which two are
visible, all Or. The shield is flanked by blue
and pink foliate motifs. The whole is
surrounded by a gilt cord ending on top in a
bow of the same, and interlaced at the
bottom with two branches in saltire, proper,
one with green leaves.
This coat of arms, attributed to Juana
Antonia Bucareli y Baeza, 4th Marchioness of
Vallehermoso and 6th Countess of Gerena,
bears in pale I the arms of the Bucareli and
Ursúa families, which are those of her
husband and paternal uncle, and in pale II, in
the first fess of the tierce, the arms of the
Baeza family, and in the third fess the
Vicentelo family arms, both belonging to her
mother, Ana de Baeza Vicentelo y Manrique. 1
The Bucareli, Ursúa, Baeza and Vicentelo
families have the following correct heraldic
representation: Bucareli: Or, a bend azure
charged with three mounts Or. 2 This family
was originally from Florence, and established
itself in Andalucia (Seville) in the early
sixteenth century with the arrival of the
Florentine Don António Maria Bucareli. Ursúa:
family of Basque origin, Or, three doves sable
spotted argent, a bordure indented azure. 3
